Pneumonia and a Crash yet were still here!!!!

So my dad was involved in a horrible wheelchair crash last week which threw him out of the chair and launched him 6 feet face down on the road into oncoming traffic. This was the single most horrifying event I have ever witnessed in my life. We also discovered after a little bit that he had pneumonia which seems was brought on by the intensity of the crash, though we are not really sure. We had a scare on weds and we were told my dad might not make and possibly may have only a few hours to live. By a miraculous turn of events he pulled through and is on the road to recovery!! I couldn't be more thankful and thrilled. We have all been under so much stress dealing with this so to finally have good news was such a relief. I know we missed some days of dispatches on the blog so I thought I would share some uplifting pictures from when the trip was going well. We will probably not be continuing on at this point but we are talking of rescheduling when James is all healed up.He sustained fractures on both knees and his left arm so those will take months to heal and he needs to be in tip top shape for a road journey as crazy as ours. Thanks for all the support! Stay tuned for more info soon.

Hills, hills and more hills.

Hey Everyone,
We just barely got internet to be able to send our first post from the open road. Yesterday was day 1 of the journey. We started in Blaine,WA and the weather was pretty decent, yet fairly overcast. Just as we were about 4 miles outside of Blaine we were surprised by Jeremy a reporter for The Northern Lites newspaper,  taking our picture and asking if he could interview us for a moment. Our route so far has been on a lot of backroads which took us on some very steep hills. They definitely made our legs burn and the wheelchair groan. We were making some really good time until the temperatures dropped considerably and the winds picked up. We luckily missed the rain until we actually got to camp and then it proceeded to rain the whole night. There was a few scary moments along the way for sure. Due to the seriously steep hills on a downward descent James wheelchair was ran into a curb by the heavy trailer he was carrying . The weight caused his chair to be thrown into the curb, luckily he was ok so he dusted himself off and wheeled on. When we were on the outskirts of Bellingham we were greeted by a woman at Fred Meyers with her two children who asked about our trip and then wanted a photo taken with us. Her and her husband own a bike shop in Seattle and she told us to stop in when passing through. It's always nice being greeted by people as we pass through. We are just about to leave camp and start day 2 of the trip.It looks like we will be riding in a little drizzle this morning. Thank you for all your continued support! We will update more tonight.

Tic Toc...

Wow its almost time to go. I want to give a little recap for those who have not read all of the old posts. My name is James Barnett, I am 50 years old and am wheelchair bound as a result of a neuromuscular disease known as muscular dystrophy. My two sons, Ben and Joel will be riding bikes along the side of my wheelchair as we ride the coastal highways fro Canada to Mexico. We have been thinking about this for some time. The time is now, its time to live and not just exist. We all need to be a part of something bigger than ourselves, so for us this is it. Please join us by following our journey, just knowing there are people who care enough to share their encouragement gives me the strength to attempt this .... thank you. As we started planning this event, we realized  there are other wheelbound adventurers out there that need an opportunity like this to give them a renewed hope; thus "Wheelbound Adventures" was born. It is our desire to use this trip as a springboard to launch this nonprofit organization. We desire to share future journeys with our wheelbound friends. If you would like help support this dream, please free to donate your time and or resources. Together we can attempt to Leave no adventurer behind.

That's a Wrap!!

We would like to thank one of my good friends Mike Tankersley at Signs 2 U Boise for setting us up with a partial wrap on our van. When we were first told Mike of our journey he was eager to be involved in our project. We recently approached Mike with our artwork and logos that we wanted on our support vehicle and he is now in the processes of putting it all together. Thank you so much for all your support. If anyone needs a vehicle wrap or any sign work done we would highly recommend Mike's company.

Clean Getaway!

We would like to express our thanks and gratitude to Utility Trailer Sales of Idaho. We went to go get our support vehicle washed and detailed for the journey. While we were in the process of having the van cleaned we were approached by the owner of Utility and he offered there services for free because he had heard of our trip and wanted to be apart of it! We are so amazed by the wonderful people we have come in contact with while preparing for this trip.

Go Pro Hero HD 1080 cameras!!!

So Dad and I picked up a couple Go Pro Hero Helmet cameras yesterday and today. We have messed around with them a little bit and we are loving them so far. It is amazing all the mounts they come with. I tested mine today on my bike ride home from work and it turned out great. I really like the angles you can get from the handlebar and seat post mounts. Look for uploaded videos soon from our new cameras!

We Got Hitched

On Wednesday we stopped over at Yanke Fabrication to see if we could get a hitch made for the B.O.B Trailer to attach to my wheelchair. We were greeted by Dennis who immediately assessed the situation and came up with a design plan. Dennis took the design plan to Ron. The two of them worked on the hitch for about 45 minutes. When it was completed it was so much more than we had expected. The engineering design was perfect, it worked like a champ. We would like to offer a special Thank You to these two gentlemen and the entire Yanke crew. When we tried to offer payment for this amazing job, it was kindly refused and they offered us well wishes for our coming journey. We consider the folks at Yanke a part of our team.

Please Welcome Our New Camp Director and Logistical Coordinator!!

This is Roy Powers, our good friend who has agreed to join our journey from Canada to Mexico. We will be picking up Roy in Pocatello in a few weeks so that we can put together our last minute trip plans and go over maps and other aspects of the trip. Roy will be going ahead of us each day and setting up our camp and all of our meals. He will also be in charge of all the logistical support for Jim's wheelchair needs such as charging of batteries and other mechanical aspects of the trip. I worked with Roy years ago at a KOA campground and if there is one thing that I know about him  is that he will probably run circles around us all when it comes to the work involved on this trip. I can't wait to have him join us and I know from talking with him that he can't wait either. I know Joel is really excited to have him join the team because he originally was going to fill this position but now thanks to Roy's dedication to this journey Joel is able to join us on bike. Thanks Roy for being apart of this amazing journey.

Brrrr Spring Training Has Been Chilly

We have been training this past week and the weather has been diverse to say the least. We had everything from sunshine to sleet and snow. The gear worked well, we only need to do a little tweeking. My batteries are being patterned for their memory cells to get the deepest charge. Next week we will be doing trailer testing. So far we have made up to 15 miles a day, next week will be 20 to 25 miles per day. We will keep you posted. Checkout the spring training video we made.

Passports on the way

Today, Ben Joel and I filled out our applications for Canada / Mexico passports. They should take about four weeks to process. This will give us access to Canada and Mexico by land or sea. Here is a sample of what they look like.

Spring Training

Ben and  I went out yesterday to get some training in. We got up on the greenbelt when my on-board power indicator notified me that I was having a catastrophic power failure. As i turned out my gel-celled batteries had failed. I suppose I should not complain since the last time they were replaced was 2006. We called A.T.S. a local medical supply company and within an hour we picked up two new cells. It looks like we will be back on the greenbelt on Monday. Look for us and say howdy.

Some new gear for the road...

Hey Everyone,
Just picked up my new panniers by Deuter they are the Rack Pack DS and I have to say I love them so far. I also picked up a front bag with a map window by Vaude it is the Roadtrip II. I installed all my new gear the other night and have done two days of road testing it all. I have put the stuff through the grinder, off curbs, over big bumps and plenty of rain. All the gear is dry and the bags still look brand new. I can't wait for the trip to get here. I also picked up a new hydration bladder by PolarPak, the Mo FLow. This thing is a beast and it is pressurized so the water just squirts out when you bite the valve. We will keep ya updated on all our gear as the trip draws nearer.

Pulling my weight

Here is the trailer that we are modifying to carry my extra wheelchair batteries and Bipap (breathing machine) batteries. In addition to power I will be carrying drinks, weather gear and snack for each days segment. The trailer is lightweight and should work just fine. Now we need to get a custom hitch made for the wheelchair. I can't wait to road test it. We will keep you posted.

Preparing For the Elements

One thing is certain, following a coastal route will involve rain, sun and wind. As a result Ben and I did some research and found a piece of gear that will protect me and my wheelchair. We just installed this canopy made by Diestco Accessories  We are excited to give it a road test. Installation only took about an hour. We are going to extend the rain shield to cover my legs.

Reclaiming This Life...

I am 50 years old and am bound to a wheelchair as a result of muscular dystrophy. I went into the chair at the age of 19. Prior to going into the chair I did everything I could to be active. I'm very thankful to a family that spent a lot of time doing outdoor activities. I spent time camping, hiking, and even canoeing. I was very restless and wanted to do everything I possibly could. I moved back east, went into the chair, and met my wife when I was nineteen. The next year we were married and making plans to start a family. Life was taking off. We had four children over the next ten years. In the early nineties we started a business that would end seven years later...Life starts to take a turn. My wife is stricken by an unknown neurological disorder. Over the course of the next couple of years she too became wheelchair bound. Wow Life is crazy. We moved back west as both of our physical conditions were deteriorating. One more curve ball  ... my wife loses the ability to handle the effects of her affliction and has been drawn into a depressed state that has caused her to be bed bound. I would be remiss not to mention that the faithful sacrifice and daily nurturing from our children has allowed us to live at home.. Being in the chair is something that I could deal with however when my wife, Rose became affected, the battled changed. The past couple of years I found myself the restless adventurer spending more and more time in my bed next to hers. I feel a deep stirring that I must make this journey to reclaim life for me and my family. I hope you join us and share the experience of this journey. Here is my favorite quote "Capture the moment and experience eternity".

Following in my father's path...

So it goes. This is my reflections and thoughts on the JOURNEY to come. My dad and I have been throwing around ideas for years as to an adventure that he and I could embark on. Our trip would have to be feasible for someone in a wheelchair, being that my father is in one and is on a breathing machine. We sat for hours pondering where to go. We threw around ideas of the Appalachian Trail and numerous hiking trails. The main problem with these is there isn't a chance a wheelchair could travel through these grueling trails. After days and months and years have passed we have finally decided upon our grand trip. We are traveling from Canada to Mexico via the Pacific Coast, I on bike and my father in his wheelchair and my brother will be traveling in the van and a scooter being our support vehicle during the trip. The background of this all happening and coming to fruition is an interesting story in and of itself. I recently am going through a divorce and my company is closing its doors May 29th so even though these have been trying events I feel they have opened the door for this trip to actually take place. This will be a very personal time for me both of self-discovery and a deep bonding time with my father and my brother. My father has beat all the odds in life and now he is going beyond just surviving and dealing with his disease. He is stepping outside of his comfort zone and pushing his physical body beyond imaginable lengths. I never grew up with a dad that could throw a football around and climb mountains, yet I have learned more from him in lessons on perseverance and the ability to deal with whatever life throws your way. We will be departing on this epic JOURNEY June 1st, 2011. It would be amazing if you could support us on this JOURNEY by donating a little to this amazing trip. There is a link on our blog that will take you directly to a paypal donation link. If you're unable to donate we would love for you to follow us on this amazing trip by checking this website daily. We will be uploading daily journals, pictures and videos for your enjoyment. Thank you for taking the time to follow us and who knows maybe we will see ya on the road. I would like to leave you with one of my favorite quotes regarding travel...
“Our battered suitcases were piled on the sidewalk again; we had longer ways to go. But no matter, the road is life.” Jack Kerouac
